European Year for Active Ageing and Solidarity between Generations 2012

2012 is the European Year of Active Ageing and Solidarity between Generations. The challenge for politicians and stakeholders will be to improve opportunities for active ageing in general and for living independently, acting in areas as diverse as employment, health care, social services, adult learning, volunteering, housing, IT services or transport.
More European initiatives

AGE Platform Europe and the EY 2012 Coalition are once again promoting the European Day of Solidarity between Generations, which takes place annualy on April 29th.

All education providers are encouraged to host activities or create initiatives to highlight and celebrate this special day.

The E-NLL network is:

  • focusing on ageing population and its particular learning needs
  • building models for inclusion of elderly people in lifelong learning through offering models for learning, mobility and volunteering
  • encouraging cooperation between senior education providers

In the E-NLL website you will find:

  • a collection of good practices from various European countries, offering various models for senior education activities
  • description of national events - workshops, seminars, conferences in the partnering countries
  • contact information with the project partners, whom you may contact for further cooperation

   Lifelong learning programme: promoting opportunities for learning in later life

E-NLL is a network, planned to promote cooperation for offering learning opportunities for learning in Later Life.
Although the problem looks well-known and explored in European level, it states much more issues than what is visible at the first glance. Elderly people need different approach to be involved into learning, specific learning paths and encouraging support, and on the other point - the training institutions need additional support to switch to elderly audience. More over, the new LLP actions offer new possibilities for learning in later life, incl. mobilities and volunteering, but they need to be made popular and operational amongst the stakeholders.

A lot of Eurpoean projects and networks are discussing the ideas of senior education and offering tools and approaches.

What E-NLL network offers in addition?
  • a collection of case-studies and practices for opportunities for learning in later life in partner countries, developed as national initiatives and projects or international cooperation projects, whose products and results could be used as further potential to tackle with the new priorities of LLP - increasing the mobility amongst seniors, voluntary actions, intergenerational and intercultural understanding;
  • workshops, focused on enabling the senior citizens to be more active in learning-in-later-life events and take the advantage of the new opportunities offered by the LLP actions, including mobility and volunteering;
  • enabling the partners organizations with new tools for promoting cooperation with the stakeholders in their countries for offering new opportunities for learning in later life;
  • national promotional and dissemination events for developing sustainable partnerships with relevant stakeholders

Hobbies and Leisure in Later Life
Hobbies and Leisure in Later Life

A workshop in thematic area of "Hobbies and Leisure in Later Life" was held in Karditsa, Greece on 16th & 17th of September 2011, organised by ANKA sa, the Development Agency of Karditsa.
A successful learning process for the elderly people can generally result in their active inclusion in the society even in their later life. ENLL has the unique opportunity to contribute to achieving this result through motivating senior citizens to continue working towards improving their skills and thus increase their confidence and self esteem as full-valued citizens of their society.

During the workshop, the participants discussed paths for involving all stakeholders in the development of active policies towards learning of the elderly, as well as how to inform elderly people about the learning opportunities.

For more information, please read the workshop broshure.

Intergenerational Learning
Intergenerational Learning

A workshop in thematic area of "Intergenerational learning" was held in Heidelberg, Germany on 17th & 18th of October 2011, organised by bfw Heidelberg.
It is the task this thematic group of the ENLL Grundtvig Network to investigate IGL (Intergenerational Learning) in a Europe wide context.
IGL is, as it sounds, the process of different generations sharing a learning experience. The accepted working definition of IGL for the thematic group is,

“Intergenerational practice aims to bring people together in purposeful, mutually beneficial activities which promote greater understanding and respect between generations and contributes to building more cohesive communities”
(Centre for Intergenerational Practice: Beth Johnson Foundation)

To add to the investigation of IGL from a theoretical view, the group also set out to develop a useful set of tools to help anyone interested in running their own activities around the main theme and you can find them on the website.
