European Year for Active Ageing and Solidarity between Generations 2012

2012 is the European Year of Active Ageing and Solidarity between Generations. The challenge for politicians and stakeholders will be to improve opportunities for active ageing in general and for living independently, acting in areas as diverse as employment, health care, social services, adult learning, volunteering, housing, IT services or transport.

AGE Platform Europe

AGE Platform Europe is a European network of around 165 organisations of and for people aged 50+ which aims to voice and promote the interests of the 150 million senior citizens in the European Union and to raise awareness on the issues that concern them most.

seVen: Senior European Volunteers Exchange Network

SEVEN is an international network of 29 organisations promoting senior volunteer exchanges. SEVEN's member organisations include NGOs, local governments, universities and research centres with at least 5 years' experience in the co-ordination and management of senior volunteer programs. This website offers information on the achievements and future outlook of projects involving senior volunteers, aimed at prospective volunteers as well as organisations and local governments.

Senior enterprise: experience never ages

Senior Enterprise is specifically designed to encourage a greater involvement with enterprise by those aged over 50. This may be through starting a business, alone or with others, acquiring or investing in a business, advising an entrepreneur or supporting innovation within a business owned by another. In this way Senior Enterprise addresses the concerns of the European Union with regard to the challenges posed by an ageing population, and the need to increase productivity, competitiveness and entrepreneurial activity across the EU. .

European education and culture funds

The European Commission has integrated its educational and training initiatives under a single umbrella, the Lifelong Learning Programme. This programme enables individuals at all stages of their lives to pursue stimulating learning opportunities across Europe.

LLP: Grundtvig Senior Volunteering Projects

Grundtvig Senior Volunteering Projects support bilateral partnerships and exchanges of senior volunteers between local organisations located in two countries participating in the Lifelong Learning Programme (LLP). Each organisation sends and hosts up to six volunteers during a two-year project. Volunteers, who should be aged 50 and over, will usually spend from three to eight weeks abroad working for projects in fields including social protection, the environment, sport and culture.

LLP: Grundtvig Workshops

Grungtvig workshops enable adult learners to participate in Workshops (learning events and seminars) taking place in another European country participating in the LLP. Workshops bring together individuals or small groups of learners (10-20 people) from several countries for their personal development and learning needs. Learners are also encouraged to share their competences and insights with others.

Europe for Citizens Programme

Europe for Citizens Programme brings Europe closer to its citizens and enables them to participate fully in the European construction. Through this programme, citizens - including seniors - have the opportunity to be involved in transnational exchanges and cooperation activities, contributing to developing a sense of belonging to common European ideals and encouraging the process of European integration.

Ambient Assisted Living Joint Programme (AAL JP)

The objective of the AAL JP is to enhance the quality of life of older people through the use of ICT. AAL Joint Programme is the funding of Research and Development projects in various AAL domains through regularly published calls for proposals. This funding activity is commonly implemented by the AAL Association and its members that are national funding organisations in actual 20 European Member States.

Learning to retire: migrants ageing in an hosting country

Aims of the study: analysing learning processes occurring in a “non formal” training environment, in order to enhance the role of animators and social operators working in these contexts, detecting how they act as facilitators of “intentional” learning processes laying behind the different “main” activities and goals of the projects they are dealing with, supporting the development of empowerme.

Questions addressed by the study:
How adult and old learners can be motivated to accept unusual learning challenges?
What role biographical approaches, and reflection, actually play in enabling learning processes?
What’s the role of verbalisation and formalisation in enhancing learning?

Generations Learn Together – Lithuanian National Event organised during the traditional Adult Learners Week

During the ALW SIH hold two-day-long ENLL national event. Teenagers studying English at SIH were invited to film Emigration screening and met its heroine Portuguese teacher Olga who was born in Lithuanian migrants’ family and came back to her fatherland in the 60s as well as SIH EL teacher Imsre who was born in Lithuanian migrants’ family in USA and has been living in Lithuania with her family for more than ten years. The students were encouraged to answer questions prepared in advance by their English teachers and discuss with Imsre and other teachers what could be learnt from older generations. We hope that these young people had not only got a great opportunity to interact with other generations and people coming from different backgrounds, but also got interested in the turbulent history of their home country. Young people were asked what kind of skills and competences they could provide to older people, and most of them mentioned they could help the older in using new technologies and traveling/ exploring the world. Older people were informed about the ENLL network resources and various possibilities for learning in later life.
During the event SIH project exhibition was organised.

Presentation of new tools and ideas for 50+ in the EE programmes - framework

The event was chaired by Eco-Consultants representative Katerina Zannaki. It begun with a presentation of the ENLL program, its aims and how it can be of use for the audience of the event and any other parties interested. Other related subjects presented were the various learning opportunities , European mobility possibilities and international co-operation pathways that ENLL provides. After that and in order to initiate a discussion over possible projects organised via ENLL, a brief presentation of best available techniques, new tools and other examples took place.
Following this, we discussed the idea of a project related to ICT and the elderly people ( 50+yrs old) and the unique challenges and difficulties that they are facing in learning new skills related to computers and the internet (such as lack of confidence, lack of assistance designed specifically for their needs, lack of opportunities, financial difficulties that hinder their development etc).
The discussion led to the inception of the idea of an Open Computer Center (equipped with at least 5 new computers) specifically designed for elderly people (hence named Open Senior Computer Centre). This idea was further discussed among the audience (mostly between the reps of Municipality authorities and the Open Senior Care Center reps) and following the suggestions of Mrs Zannaki, a conclusion has been reached concerning the characteristics of the place and the funding of the project.
More specifically, the Open Senior Care Centre of Papagou-Holargos agreed to provide the required establishment where the Open Computer Centre will be housed, and the Municipality authorities would look into possible financing from other EU initiatives and programmes (for example the National Strategic Reference Framework (NSRF) 2007-2013). Also it was mutually agreed that the best way of reaching the elderly participants would be to be taught by other elderly people with an experience on ICT that are familiar with the special challenges of teaching people over 50 for the first time on computer and internet basic use and applications.
Finally, possible routes of disseminating the initiative Open Senior Computer Centre to the broader audience were investigated; among all possible alternatives, the local media and the Open Care Senior Center of Papagos-Holargos were chosen for the purpose of attracting volunteers and future participants, as well as any other NGOs that could be interested in participating on the scheme.
Event date: 18-10-2012
Target group: Stakeholders from the public authorities and organisations involved with the provision of services to 50+ people.

Presentation of ENLL project at National event in Netherlands

October 16 last, a successful ENLL congress took place in the Netherlands.
The congress was marked by experiences in learning later in life.

There were both people who themselves are learning at a later age as representatives from various elderly organizations that offer learning in later life.
A unique opportunity for all parties to gain new ideas and networking.
The program was therefore entirely devoted to 'meet and inspire’.

The congress started with two pitches which showed both sides of learning in later life; the experience from the participant and the experience from the teacher / trainer.
After the pitches RitskeJan Merkus gave a presentation about why it is important to learn in later live and what is the best way to teach to the elderly.
There was sufficient material for the participants to discuss about. This possibility was created through a speed date, in which participants had the opportunity to meet new people and to exchange ideas about this topic.
After speed dating, there was a closing reception where the participants, while enjoying a snack and a drink, could network and talk about learning in later life.
The varied program and the diversity in the group created a dynamic and successful congress.

The participants experienced the congress as interesting, instructive and a good opportunity to meet interesting people in a good atmosphere.

Workgroup meeting on Competence development in Adult Learning

Four workgroups had been established as an integral part of the E-NLL workplan and each of these dealt with a specific part of the intended research and information exchange. However, the workgroup meeting scheduled for Greece had to be postponed and relocated, ending in an arrangement to have the meeting in the Netherlands. As part of the preparation of the session, Reflexion contacted a number of Grundtvig project promoters with invitations to join the session and to exchange relevant information. This resulted in a successful meeting in Utrecht, but also in establishing contacts with fellow Grundtvig-projects like “SILVER”, “RIVER” and “Co-Creating a Learning Society“, but also with the Leonardo funded projects “SUB-SCRIPT” and “Create-In”. During the seminar good practices were presented and policies for future approaches were discussed.

Seniors for Seniors – Let’s Fight Social Exclusion Together

The final event of the Nordplus Adult Programme project “Still Active”, coordinated by Soros International House - International conference "Seniors for Seniors – Let’s Fight Social Exclusion Together” was held on May 18th in Vilnius, Lithuania.

In addition to the project partners from Latvia, Estonia, Sweden, Finland, and Lithuania, the conference was attended by senior learners from all partner countries, by people who represented different institutions, which in one way or the other are related to the project idea and could use the project final product in their activities. There were representatives from the Education Exchange Support Foundation, the Lithuanian Association of Adult Education, the Third Age University, Red Cross Society Seniors club in Vilnius, International Labour Contact Net, the representatives from Association Seniors Initiative Centre in Kaunas.

The conference was opened with the welcoming words from Daiva Malinauskiene, Soros International House director and the project coordinator, and the representative from the Education Exchange Support Foundation coordinating Nordplus/Adult program activities in Lithuania.

Then the plenary started. The friendly atmosphere of the conference was created by the greeting songs performed by the project participants – Vilnius Arthritis Club ensemble „Rugiagele“ (Cornflower). They were joined by senior learners from Kuldiga, Latvia. Project coordinators presented visual retrospective of all the project activities, key speakers presented topics on the importance of involvement of seniors in different activities, opportunities for learning in later life, promotion of voluntary service, discussed ways how to stay healthy and fit in later life. All the conference participants participated in the demonstration of physical exercises for elderly people.

After lunch project partners and senior learners participated in a workshop „Sharing experience in textile dyeing using organic materials“ led by the senior textile artist Jurate Urbiene in her studio in Vilnius.

Competence development in adult learning

Discussions and practical models for competence development on senior volunteering

A workshop report has been produced, which was presented by Joost Thissen of Reflexion at the final E-NLL conference in Sofia on the 25th of October 2012.

Hobbies and Leisure in Later Life
Hobbies and Leisure in Later Life

A workshop in thematic area of "Hobbies and Leisure in Later Life" was held in Karditsa, Greece on 16th & 17th of September 2011, organised by ANKA sa, the Development Agency of Karditsa.
A successful learning process for the elderly people can generally result in their active inclusion in the society even in their later life. ENLL has the unique opportunity to contribute to achieving this result through motivating senior citizens to continue working towards improving their skills and thus increase their confidence and self esteem as full-valued citizens of their society.

During the workshop, the participants discussed paths for involving all stakeholders in the development of active policies towards learning of the elderly, as well as how to inform elderly people about the learning opportunities.

For more information, please read the workshop broshure.

Intergenerational Learning
Intergenerational Learning

A workshop in thematic area of "Intergenerational learning" was held in Heidelberg, Germany on 17th & 18th of October 2011, organised by bfw Heidelberg.
It is the task this thematic group of the ENLL Grundtvig Network to investigate IGL (Intergenerational Learning) in a Europe wide context.
IGL is, as it sounds, the process of different generations sharing a learning experience. The accepted working definition of IGL for the thematic group is,

“Intergenerational practice aims to bring people together in purposeful, mutually beneficial activities which promote greater understanding and respect between generations and contributes to building more cohesive communities”
(Centre for Intergenerational Practice: Beth Johnson Foundation)

To add to the investigation of IGL from a theoretical view, the group also set out to develop a useful set of tools to help anyone interested in running their own activities around the main theme and you can find them on the website.

   About the project

E-NLL is a network, planned to promote cooperation for offering learning opportunities for learning in Later Life.
Although the problem looks well-known and explored in European level, it states much more issues than what is visible at the first glance. Elderly people need different approach to be involved into learning, specific learning paths and encouraging support, and on the other point - the training institutions need additional support to switch to elderly audience. More over, the new LLP actions offer new possibilities for learning in later life, incl. mobilities and volunteering, but they need to be made popular and operational amongst the stakeholders.

A lot of Eurpoean projects and networks are discussing the ideas of senior education and offering tools and approaches.

What E-NLL network offers in addition?
  • a collection of case-studies and practices for opportunities for learning in later life in partner countries, developed as national initiatives and projects or international cooperation projects, whose products and results could be used as further potential to tackle with the new priorities of LLP - increasing the mobility amongst seniors, voluntary actions, intergenerational and intercultural understanding;
  • workshops, focused on enabling the senior citizens to be more active in learning-in-later-life events and take the advantage of the new opportunities offered by the LLP actions, including mobility and volunteering;
  • enabling the partners organizations with new tools for promoting cooperation with the stakeholders in their countries for offering new opportunities for learning in later life;
  • national promotional and dissemination events for developing sustainable partnerships with relevant stakeholders
